Artist Statement
In his paintings, Kees Blom explores silence, light and presence. Working from a realist tradition, he is not seeking a literal representation of reality, but the stillness that exists beneath the visible world.
His work emerges through close observation. A horizon above the North Sea, a white vessel in soft backlight, an empty space — simple images that become carriers of silence, memory and timelessness. Blom is interested in the tension between presence and absence, between materiality and quietness.
Within the series North Sea Light and Silence Bowls, light plays a central role. Not as dramatic effect, but as a subtle force that reveals form, space and emotion. Through reduction and simplicity, he aims to create a visual language rooted in calmness and contemplation.
His paintings are built slowly in oil on linen, with careful attention to nuance, surface and atmospheric depth. Technique is never an end in itself, but a means to make stillness tangible.
In a time dominated by speed and distraction, Blom seeks a form of visual silence. His work invites the viewer to slow down and look longer — to experience quietness not as emptiness, but as presence.
Artist Statement
In mijn schilderijen onderzoek ik stilte, licht en aanwezigheid. Vanuit een realistische schildertraditie zoek ik niet naar een letterlijke weergave van de werkelijkheid, maar naar de verstilling die achter het zichtbare aanwezig is.
Mijn werk ontstaat vanuit aandachtig kijken. Een horizon boven de Noordzee, een witte kom in zacht tegenlicht, een leegte in een ruimte — eenvoudige beelden die voor mij dragers worden van rust, herinnering en tijdloosheid. Ik ben geïnteresseerd in de spanning tussen aanwezigheid en afwezigheid, tussen materie en stilte.
Binnen de series North Sea Light en Silence Bowls speelt licht een centrale rol. Niet als dramatisch effect, maar als een stille kracht die vorm, ruimte en emotie zichtbaar maakt. Door reductie en eenvoud probeer ik een beeldtaal te creëren waarin rust en contemplatie centraal staan.
Mijn schilderijen worden langzaam opgebouwd in olieverf op paneel, met aandacht voor nuance, huidwerking en atmosferische gelaagdheid. Techniek is daarbij nooit een doel op zichzelf, maar een middel om verstilling voelbaar te maken.
In een tijd waarin beelden voortdurend om aandacht vragen, zoek ik juist naar vertraging. Ik wil werk maken dat de toeschouwer uitnodigt om langer te kijken — werk waarin stilte niet leeg is, maar betekenis draagt
